Another nice piece....An olive tree with a massive base....a very strong tree with a lot of dense foliage which was a bit high to leave it...the nearby herd did the trimming....Considering its base it wasnt hard to dig it out,it only had one medium i would say tap root and the rest were young strong roots....Due to erosion soil got piled up behind the trunk and roots were developed quite high.....No foliage Greg so no debate on this one.....I am afraid you cant see the braches very well from these fotos....Enjoy what you see....

Re: MASSIVE BASE WILD OLIVE
If you remove completely the right branch as shown on the first photo then you gone have a real massive trunk
Think about it

Re: MASSIVE BASE WILD OLIVE
You found something else now to argue with me.... Your friend Graham will be around soon and we will discuss all the cases on the spot....Maybe you have a point there but wait to see the tree live first.....

No chance Greg....if we end up like this then all the trees will be the same....All our olives will be the same...whats the point?

i have to agree with Savvas on this one
if you remove that branch, all the wild "grace" and movement is gone
MASSIVE BASE WILD OLIVE
Wow.... What a beast. Looking at the first pic (which would be my front), I would personally tilt the tree to the left slightly, turn the left trunk into deadwood and preserve and build the tree with the right side. Beautiful movement and age.

Re: MASSIVE BASE WILD OLIVE
interesting pot!
For the sake of discussion:
I think that it would be a shame to waste a big, interesting part of the trunk that has also some naturally carved deadwood. A trunk with such character is not a common find, so personally i would try to enhance it, focus on it rather than remove part of it.
Lazare, your virtual gives to the tree a more feminine look, which does not match the rugged trunk.
Just my humble opinion.

Re: MASSIVE BASE WILD OLIVE
In my design a key role played to obtain the trunk taper, for sure the tree has great potential, but in the end it's all a matter of taste.

I agree with you 100%.
If you ask 100 bonsai enthusiast to come up with a plan/virtual, you will probably end up with 100 different results.
When it comes to styling a tree, and i guess we all agree on this one, it is important to focus on some unique features and enhance them with your design/styling. In this case, the most important features of this tree (at least for me) IMHO are the trunk and its rugged appearance, and the natural deadwood.
But then again, as you say, it is a matter of taste.
