Help needed with olive
Savvas and Greg you are olive experts, can you give me any advice regarding this collected wild olive?
I have been struggling with this tree for some years. The base is about 28 cm wide.
Originally it had a straight branch behind the long dead branch that I tried to incorporate into the design
but I messed it up and removed it.
My idea now is to train new branches from the top in grooves that will be carved along the deadwood.
Or should I remove the dead branch and try and develop an apex?
Of course it needs further carving.
Many thanks

Nice tree , huge base, needs a lot of carving!
I see an other hollow ancient olive bonsai tree. You can treat the new growth like I did with my hollow olive tree.
Dont remove the upper dead wood now you can remove it later if you dont like it.
I dont see a lot of new growth you may need a better substrate. Water and vertilize more often as well.
look farword to see the development of this one.
P.s not so expert on olives Christo

Gia sou Christo, for now let it grow,no need to do anything. You need more growth thus a healthy tree nad then you go ahead with styling. You have a very nice tree there, its one of those they call SUMO.From what you write you have it for some years but i feel that new growth is weak,so care for the tree first and then for styling.
Take your time and the tree will reward you...Gregs virtual its not bad ,actualy, you have an option there.Keep us posted Christo.

Hello everybody!Greg wrote:a little virtual... ...
Greg, look at the dead branch. I believe that its age is not consistent with the trunk base. What do you think? What is the opinion of others?
This is a common "problem" which collected olives present because of the bulge they naturally form under their trunk. Then the conicity is too abrupt, not aesthetically pleasing -my personal opinion, of course- The same goes for phillyreas, too. They form those same bulges.

You are right Alexandra, but with the right carving that can easily be fixed and blend nicely with the rest.....

Re: Help needed with olive
I have this tree since 2005. Sorry I have no old photos.
I had it initially in the ground for 2 years, then I corrected the roots and tried to develop
the second branch that has now been removed.
You are right, I haven't looked after it well in the last 2 years and it was in bad soil mix that was compacted.
However, it has enough strength and it keeps producing vigorous suckers low down the trunk, I removed over 2 dozen
before I photographed it the other day. I find this is a problem with collected wild olives.

I know suckers keep u busy but i quess we cant have everything...I read somewhere..."The tree is honest,it never lies",and its true especially with olives,if you are good with it then it will reward you,if you are not carefull with it then you cant expect fast reults.... So many suckers take away all the energy of the tree Christo.

Re: Help needed with olive
There are too many options when it comes to style this tree, some bolder than others.
I would never go with a strictly classic solution as the one presented by Greg, as i think the base is too wide for the height of it, even for a "sumo" styled tree.
I would explore as many possible options by drawing some sketches (removing parts of the trunk, not just a bit of carving) until i would be satisfied.
Then again it is just MHO.

Re: Help needed with olive
the tree that appears by clicking the link above, has a pleasant taper, a well defined leader and very few branches that make it into a nice and powerful tree, even though it will take a few years of proper training.
the tree presented at the beginning of the post needs some refinement in terms of taper, and then selection of branches and primary styling.
Just MHO.

Nice one ! I like it. You will eventually have a very compact and powerfull tree. how often do you feed your trees?
Help needed with olive
Greg, I must admit I tend to be lazy about feeding. Once a week in and spring and autumn but most of the time it's every 2 or 3 weeks. But I use slow release fertilizer pellets in the soil mix.

Re: Help needed with olive
Christo, river sand we collect, the rest he buys from the market...I feed, nearly every other day until nearly mid July, and started again late September until now....I use cheap 20-20-20 and also Green Dream.
This year i stoped using sand...i sieve it and use only small size stones with perlite.
